England - North York Moors to Scarborough

Our next stop was at Pickering Castle, erected on a hilltop site overlooking Pickering Brook. It was only a 20 minute drove along the main route between Helmsley and Scarborough. It was originally built with timber and earth as a motte-and-bailey fortification, then rebuilt in stone in the early 1200s.
